“Reviving Intimacy: Innovative Cardiac Catheterization Procedure Heals Man’s Lower Body Injury and Halts Hematuria”

A man in his 40s, surnamed Li, had an injury to his lower body. After intercourse, his urine was filled with blood. Through a joint effort by urology and cardiology specialists at Yuan Rung Hospital, a cardiac catheter embolization procedure was performed to stop the bleeding. Finally, Mr. Li could enjoy his intimate life again.

Mr. Li sustained a lower body injury due to an accident four years ago. Although there was improvement, blood was found in his urine after having intercourse with his wife more than two years ago. A month ago, he visited Yuan Rung Hospital. After a joint consultation between the Urology and Cardiology departments, it was suspected that an injury to the internal pudendal artery had formed a fistula, leading to bleeding during intense movements in intercourse.

Mr. Li said that when he had hematuria, blood clots made urination difficult. He had to go to the hospital for catheterization. The most severe case involved a bleeding volume of up to 100 cc. The doctor used a cystoscope for examination and found the entire bladder filled with blood.

There was another significant bleeding incident during this year’s Lunar New Year. Despite undergoing a series of tests at a northern teaching hospital, the cause could not be identified. He had to live his daily life with a catheter inserted and a urine bag attached.

In February of this year, Mr. Li underwent an examination at the Urology department of Yuan Rung Hospital. The attending physician, Deputy Superintendent Lieng-Yi LU, conducted a cystoscopy and ureteroscopy examination and found a rupture and bleeding phenomenon in the small arteries of the urethra and prostate. After a consultation with cardiologist Mu-Hsin CHANG (also a Deputy Superintendent ), it was found that after the internal pudendal artery, which supplies the erectile function of the penile corpus cavernosum, was injured, a fistula gradually formed between it and the urethra, leading to bleeding during intense pelvic movements.

Mr. Li was treated by Dr. Chang Mu-Hsin with cardiac catheterization. Dr. Chang inserted a catheter into Mr. Li’s left femoral artery, and then a micro-catheter was used to place a hemostatic coil embolism. The procedure was successfully completed on the right side, but the left side was more challenging. The cardiac catheter was first moved up 20 cm, then rotated 180 degrees downward. Under precise positioning of the instrument, the surgery was completed in less than an hour. Mr. Li was discharged from the hospital two days later, with the wound only the size of a pen tip.

Mr. Li said that there was no longer any blood in his urine after intercourse. He expressed gratitude to Doctors Lu and Chang for their treatment, allowing him to enjoy his sexual life again.
