Precaution of diarrhea

  • Diarrhea: Frequently passing loose, watery stools that are not well-formed is referred to as acute diarrhea if it lasts for up to two weeks, and chronic diarrhea if it lasts for more than two weeks.
  • Symptoms: Abdominal pain, increased frequency of bowel movements, increased intestinal motility, urgent and loose stools, changes in stool color.
  • Precautions:
  1. Temporarily avoid food to reduce the burden on the gastrointestinal system and allow it to rest for 6-8 hours. Refrain from eating until diarrhea symptoms subside. You may try drinking plain water first and if there are no issues, gradually reintroduce food.
  2. Take medications as instructed by the physician. If symptoms do not improve, please visit the outpatient department of the hospital.
  3. When starting to eat again, consume small, frequent meals. Begin with a liquid diet, such as sports drinks or rice soup. If there are no discomforts, gradually introduce soft foods such as congee or white toast. Once symptoms improve, resume a regular diet.
  4. During the acute phase, avoid consuming dairy products, fibrous foods (such as raw salads and fruits), legumes, greasy foods, and stimulating foods like tobacco, alcohol, coffee, and spicy foods, as they may cause bloating or exacerbate symptoms.
  5. Drink plenty of water, replenish electrolytes, and observe the color of urine. If the urine appears dark, it indicates inadequate hydration.
  6. Avoid consuming undercooked vegetables, meats, seafood, and stimulating beverages like coffee and alcohol.
  7. Drink acidic beverages like orange juice, as they can help inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli in the colon.
  8. Maintain cleanliness and dryness around the anal area, avoiding the use of talcum powder to minimize irritation.
  9. Remember to thoroughly wash hands before and after meals and after using the bathroom.
