Precautions after cardiac catheterization -Catheterization via the groin

  1. After the procedure, you may be required to be observed in the intensive care unit or return to the ward for observation. The nursing staff will assist you in finding a comfortable position to rest in bed. If the catheterization was performed through the groin, you must remain in bed during the hemostasis process, and activities such as eating, excretion, and movement should be performed in bed.
  2. After the procedure, pressure will be applied to the puncture site using a sandbag for 6-8 hours. During this time, you can slightly tilt your body or make horizontal movements. To alleviate lower back pain, you can place a small pillow under your waist. However, it is important to keep the limb where the incision is located straight and avoid bending it to prevent bleeding (if you need to cough, please apply pressure to the incision with your hand).
  3. The nursing staff will regularly monitor the condition of the incision. If you experience any discomfort or notice numbness in your limbs or a warm sensation at the incision site, please inform the healthcare personnel immediately.
  4. During bed rest, you can perform foot grasping or rotating movements to promote blood circulation and reduce numbness and swelling.
  5. After returning to your room, you can start by drinking a small amount of water. If you do not experience nausea or vomiting, you can proceed with eating (you can elevate the head of the bed by approximately 30 degrees while eating). Due to the injection of contrast dye during the procedure, you may feel thirsty. Increasing your water intake can help eliminate the dye through urine.
  6. During bed rest, you will need to use a bedpan or urinal for excretion. Due to restricted movement, it may be difficult to defecate or urinate smoothly. Please relax and inform the nursing staff if you encounter difficulties in bowel movements or urination, so they can assist you.
  7. The nursing staff will inform you of the timing for getting out of bed. Please adopt a gradual progressive movement to change your posture. When getting out of bed for the first time, it is essential to have someone accompany you to prevent dizziness or falls due to postural hypotension.
  8. On the day after the procedure, the nursing staff will change the dressing for your incision. Occasional bruising near the incision is normal and can be reassured after being examined by a doctor. Bruising on the skin will gradually fade in about two to three weeks, and any mild discomfort at the incision site will also diminish during this period.
  9. Within one week after discharge, remember to apply pressure to the incision site when sneezing, coughing, or exerting force during bowel movements.
  10. If you experience any discomfort after discharge, please promptly return to the cardiac department outpatient clinic or the emergency room.
  11. On the day following discharge, you do not need to change the dressing anymore. However, if you notice redness, swelling, or signs of infection at the incision site, it is important to return to the hospital for a follow-up appointment as soon as possible.
